Over the past several years, Iceland has emerged as a vibrant medical and scientific innovation center, with Kerecis at the forefront of wound healing and tissue repair.
The Arctic Midnight Sun Surgical Workshop is the leading scientific workshop for advancing the knowledge of the utility of fish skin grafts for managing surgical wounds and burn injuries. The scientific workshop entry is competition-based. The exchange of ideas is fostered between all attendees during this exclusive small-capacity workshop, where attendees present their findings.
Process:
1. Follow the registration link on this site to apply for your chance to participate in the Aurora Award competition (see eligibility requirements below)
2. Once you have received confirmation of your eligibility, Kerecis will provide you with a template and instructions for your case(s) submission.
3. A committee of experts in the surgical field will conduct a blind-review and score all case report submissions. Case submissions are ranked based on scientific value, completeness, novelty, and clinical relevance.
4. Only the highest-scoring cases will win an Aurora Award and be admitted to the scientific workshop to present their winning case.

The Arctic Midnight Sun Surgical Workshop allows eligible providers to exchange clinical application techniques for the educational advancement of the use of fish skin grafts.

Confirmation of registration does not guarantee your seat at the workshop. Attendance is determined through the evaluation of case/abstract submissions.
Medical professionals are eligible if the following specialty and procedures are relevant to their practice:
Residents are eligible to submit for the resident award. Residents selected as winners will receive an educational grant to attend a national conference in their home country.
Scientific workshop attendees must actively participate in the entire symposium, discussions, and provide active feedback by answering follow-up questions.
Kerecis covers standard-fare air travel, meals, and lodging for attendees for the duration of the workshop. Travel must be booked by Kerecis; self-booked travel arrangements will not be reimbursed. Kerecis does not pay for family members and/or spouses.
Government employees are not allowed to participate in this event.
Kerecis will only cover the cost of selected eligible attendees for educational benefits.

Aurora Awards: Surgical and Burn Cases
Case Series will be blindly reviewed by an external review committee.
Notifications of decisions will be sent out April 2024.
Michael Van Vliet, MD, FACS is a board-certified plastic surgeon (American Board of Plastic Surgery), and a board-certified surgical intensivist (American Board of Surgery) and is currently the Medical Director for the Van Vliet Plastic Surgery Center and the Burn and Reconstructive Center at Blake Hospital in Bradenton, Florida.
Dr. Van Vliet was accepted into medical school straight out of high school as part of a highly competitive combined bachelor/M.D. program. Having completed undergraduate and medical doctorate programs with a unique emphasis on humanities and the underserved, Dr. Van Vliet spent a considerable portion of his training in developing nations.
Dr. Van Vliet received his medical degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, NY. He then completed a 6-year residency at the prestigious Ivy League hospital Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and multiple fellowships in Los Angeles at the renowned University of Southern California. It was during his fellowship at the Los Angeles County Burn Center that he was called to the burn and reconstructive field. Dr. Van Vliet has over 10 years of experience as a plastic surgeon. He is attentive to the needs of his patients, believing that understanding and communication is essential to delivering the desired goal.
As the medical director for Burn and Reconstructive Center at Blake Hospital, his compassionate care begins with the most critically ill burn patients. He also treats patients with hand injuries, complex wounds, traumatic defects, congenital deformities, and cancer. Dr. Van Vliet is actively involved in clinical research and has served as the investigator on numerous multi-center trials.
Outside of work, Dr. Van Vliet spends time with his wife, Kelly, and their two children in Florida.
Dr. Dane Daley is an orthopedic hand surgeon who is fellowship-trained and board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and Hand Surgery. He specializes in hand and upper extremity surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, brachial plexus surgery, and congenital hand surgery.
Dr. Daley is currently an associate professor and the division chair of the orthopedic hand and microvascular surgery department at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. He leads residents in orthopedic surgical mission work in Bonne Fin, Haiti, which is a significant focus in his career. He earned his medical degree from East Tennessee State University Medical School in Johnson City, TN. Dr. Daley completed his orthopedic residency at MUSC and then went on to complete a fellowship in hand surgery at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, NC.
He has received numerous awards for research during his academic career. He is the president of the Charleston Hand Society and desires to improve the quality of hand surgery in the Charleston area.
Prof. Lars-Peter Kamolz, MD, is a distinguished Plastic, Aesthetic, and Reconstructive Surgeon with extensive leadership roles in academia and healthcare. He graduated from the University of Vienna Medical School and holds a Master of Science in Quality and Process Management from Danube University. Prof. Kamolz serves as Professor of Plastic Surgery and heads the Division of Plastic, Aesthetic, and Reconstructive Surgery at the Medical University of Graz. He is also the Deputy Chief Medical Officer at the LKH-University Hospital in Graz and the Director of COREMED – Cooperative Center for Regenerative Medicine at Joanneum Research Forschungsgesellschaft mbH. Renowned for his prolific research, he has authored over 250 peer-reviewed articles, edited several books, and received numerous awards for his contributions to Plastic Surgery, Burn Care, and Regenerative Medicine.
Dr. Saju Joseph is a Professor and Vice Chair of Surgery at Touro University Nevada. He is also the driving force behind the establishment of the General Surgery Residency program at Valley Health System. Dr. Joseph earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his residency training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School. He further specialized in transplant and hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery through a fellowship at the University of Edinburgh and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Currently, Dr. Joseph serves as a Board-certified General Surgeon at Valley Health System in Las Vegas, Nevada.
This scientific workshop focuses on new developments in the OR, burn, and trauma use of the Kerecis fish-skin technology and explores new developments in regenerative therapies. It offers a unique opportunity to exchange ideas with providers from around the globe and also a chance to interact and provide input to the Kerecis science and development team.

Located just below the Arctic Circle. expect the summer in Iceland to vary from what you are used to; average temperatures in June are 45-55°F or 5-13°C. As the local saying goes: If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes! We recommend you pack waterproof and warm clothes. Reykjavik is a wonderful city best explored on foot. To be ready for all occasions, a hat, scarf, and mittens combined with comfortable shoes but also sunglasses are well placed. Indoor attire for the workshop is business casual.
The vicinity of the Arctic Circle translates into 24 hours of bright light during June. Perhaps bring an eye mask should you be worried about a proper night’s rest.
Iceland is largely a cash-free country. Most common credit cards are accepted throughout. Tipping is not expected.
Kerecis provides hotel accommodations for participating doctors and medical professionals for the workshop duration. That is: from early check-in on the 12th of June until check-out on the 14th of June.
